About Project CBD
Project CBD started in 2010 by two journalists who had been covering medical marijuana. They quickly realized how medical marijuana is the future of medicine so they created a website where scientific breakthroughs and other cannabis-related news would be reported.
The journalists wanted Project CBD to be a forum to:
- Support clinical CBD research efforts by collecting, analyzing and publishing data.
- Highlight where people can go get CBD medicine, including storefronts and delivery services.
- Conduct training workshops for marijuana dispensary and health employees about the benefits and challenges of CBD-rich medicine and ways to maximize interactions with patients.
- Refute the wrongful notion that medical marijuana is really a front for stoners or people who use marijuana to get high.
- Co-produce an educational video series called, Cannabis Conversations.
- Provide a free online newsletter.
About Martin A. Lee
One of the journalists and cofounders of Project CBD is Martin A. Lee. Martin has authored several books. He also founded FAIR, a media watch group.
Martin began writing about cannabis and medical marijuana when he moved to California several years ago. He was drawn into it mainly from a social justice/civil rights viewpoint. He would be reporting at different forums and be exposed to doctors discussing CBD, and other forms of medical marijuana.
He (along with journalist Fred Gardner) founded Project CBD as a way to provide continuous quality info about cannabis and the medical breakthroughs of it.
In creating Project CBD they knew that there would be some kickback from the DEA and other forms of government officials but they knew that medical marijuana would eventually be legalized.
Project CBD 101 Series
In this section of their website, Project CBD breaks down what cannabidiol (CBD) is. It discusses how CBD is a naturally occurring compound found in the cannabis plant and how it has been used as a medicinal herb for centuries.
They also discuss how medical research is starting to uncover how valuable CBD is and all the treatment benefits it contains.
CBD has been shown to a wide range of illnesses including:
- Chronic inflammation
- Skin disorders (acne, psoriasis)
- Chron’s disease
- Type-2 diabetes
- Multiple sclerosis
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Parkinson’s disease
- PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
Within this section, they discussed how CBD oil is the “it-medicine of the moment”.
They went on to explain how CBD oil is extracted from the resinous trichomes of cannabis plants. It went on to name the different methods to extract CBD oil. (They stated CO2 extraction is the most prevalent commercial method)
They also stated how it is not safe to make CBD oil at home and to warn of fake CBD oil that has been spiked with hemp seed oil.
Some companies aren’t creating pure CBD oil products. In fact, they may contaminate their products with:
- pesticide residues
- corn syrup
- artificial flavors
- thinning agents and colors
- Other types of toxins
So it’s best you get your CBD oil from a reputable source such as licensed dispensaries in states that have legalized cannabis for medical and recreational use.
This section also had articles that discussed hemp, CBD myths, and how CBD is beneficial for pets.
Project CBD Science
In this section of their website, Project CBD discloses scientific findings related to cannabidiol (CBD).
They mentioned how scientific literature has identified more than 65 molecular targets of CBD. Also, they explain the process of how it binds to certain receptors within our body.
Project CBD also had an article where they discussed the endocannabinoid system (ECS). They mentioned how medical research uncovered receptors in our brains that respond to cannabis, leading to excellent health revelations.
They went on to reveal how the best therapeutic results in lab tests were when CBD was combined with THC (the chemical in marijuana that makes you high). It can especially help those who deal with peripheral neuropathy, a painful condition associated with chronic diseases such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and cancer.
Project CBD also has an article in this a section that details the different type of CBD-rich strains out on the market. There are roughly 2 types of CBD strains: the ones that are CBD-dominant with little-to-no THC and balanced strains with roughly equal—or significant—amounts of both CBD and THC.
The last article in this section discusses terpenes and the “entourage effect.”
Around 200 terpenes have been found in cannabis and are healthy for people. In fact, some terpenes are found in everyday spices such as black pepper, oregano, and other edible herbs. Some are even found in green, leafy vegetables.
When using a whole cannabis plant that contains terpenes, CBD, THC, and numerous other compounds, the entourage effect takes place. This entourage effect has a synergistic approach on the body, thus allowing it to experience more health benefits vs. taking CBD (or THC) by itself.
The education section of Project CBD is mainly meant to help educate people about CBD.
They have an article where they allow people to download their brochures for free. These brochures go over the following topics:
- Introducing CBD
- Companion plants for cannabis growing
- Cannabis for Opiate Addiction
- CBD dosing guide
They also have a part where people can signup for their email newsletter, announcing upcoming events, buy Martin A. Lee’s Smoke Signal book, and a FAQ that answers numerous questions about CBD.
This section is merely a questionnaire to see if someone could be eligible for a CBD research study.
CBD For Diseases And Conditions
This section is a comprehensive list of all the diseases and conditions that CBD has been shown to help alleviate.
Project CBD mentions how cannabis was used all the way back in 2700 BC in ancient China. They would use the herb to cure more than a hundred ailments, including constipation, arthritis, gout, and memory loss.
Now, ever since the 1950s, some U.S. doctors have been utilizing cannabis to treat a slew of health ailments. Yet, it was still illegal nationwide.
It wasn’t until Dr. Tod Mikuriya spearheaded an attempt to legalize cannabis in California. He compiled an extensive list of chronic conditions treatable with cannabis use. This led to California becoming the first state to legalize medical marijuana in 1996.
Now, more and more states are starting to legalize marijuana not only for medical use but for recreational purposes as well.
